Transcranial Focused Ultrasound (FUS)

Transcranial FUS is a novel image-guided procedure that is currently FDA approved for the treatment of essential tremor and tremor-predominant Parkinson's disease. There are no incisions, no anesthesia, and no implantable hardware. Varying the frequency and duty-cycle can result in different biological effects. FUS can be used for tissue ablation or neuromodulation, or it can be used to safely and non-invasively open the blood brain barrier in a specific region of the brain. Rajiv Chopra, Ph.D., and Bhavya R. Shah, M.D., are leading the clinical and research efforts in focused ultrasound. Dr. Shah is the site principal investigator for the human-focused ultrasound clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease.
